How to Change Your Air Conditioner’s Air Filter

May 07, 2024

Why Is Changing the Air Filter for Your AC Unit So Important?

  1. Gather the Necessary Tools: The first thing our air conditioning contractors do before they start the process of replacing an AC filter is gather all the materials and tools they will need. It is important that you do this as well to make sure you have the filter that fits the specific AC unit you are working on before you start the project.
  2. Locate the Air Filter: The placement of air filters is not the same for every AC unit, so you need to find or look up where the air filter is located on your AC unit. If you are having trouble, our air conditioning contractors can help. Give us a call and we can answer any questions you have about your AC unit.
  3. Turn Off the Power: You must turn off the power before you begin replacing your AC unit’s air filter. Our air conditioning contractors are trained to turn off any appliance before they start working on it. Doing this significantly decreases the likelihood that you will get electrocuted by the AC unit.
  4. Remove the Old Air Filter: Before you can put in a new air filter you must remove the old air filter. Typically, no tools are required to remove an old air filter, but you may need something to help you pop it out. If you are unsure how to remove an old air filter, contact our air conditioning contractors for assistance.
  5. Inspect and Clean the Filter Housing Spot: After removing the old air filter, you may need to vacuum the area where the air filter sits in the unit before you put a new filter in. This is due to the AC unit collecting dust when it runs, which is why the air filter must be replaced occasionally.
  6. Install the New Air Filter: After you clean where the old air filter was, you can install the new air filter. Replacing your air filter is important because it ensures that the air being blown into your home is clean and free of harmful stuff such as mold and bacteria.
